Ocean & Beach Popsicles

I am having so much fun with Budget Saver Popsicles this summer. Pretty much living out every fantasy, including being near the beach. It takes me a minimum of 3 1/2 hours to drive to one, so for now I dream of sand getting stuck in my bathing suit bottom, and chillin’ with the jelly fish in the water by making ocean and beach popsicles.

You will want to use Budget Saver popsicles for this project. They are very affordable, but still a quality find. Available at most grocery stores, their website even offers you a store locator to make sure you can find them:

Small sour candy wedge slices

Fruit by the Foot or Fruit Roll-Ups

To begin your ocean and beach popsicles, set out all unwrapped candy and corn syrup. Pour corn syrup into a small cup and have a food safe/clean paint brush. Cut up fruit roll-ups into seaweed shape with the tip of a sharp knife. Roll Laffy Taffy with a rolling pin to thin out. Use a knife to cut fish shapes into Laffy Taffy. Have room temperature set quite cool, and keep paper towels nearby.

Take out first popsicle, wipe off with paper towel, and set on clean paper towel. Working quickly, spread corn syrup on bottom half of popsicle with a food paint brush. This is for your beach popsicles. Pour graham cracker crumbs onto corn syrup then pick up popsicle to allow excess crumbs to fall off. Return to freezer and repeat with other popsicles.

For the ocean popsicles, you will do the same, but with rock candy. Place rocks on corn syrup, and put popsicle back in fridge. No need to lift the popsicle to shake anything off. The smaller the candy pieces, the better.

Alternate working between ocean or beach popsicles, using the popsicle that has been in fridge for the longest period of time. Use rainbow sour strips for a towel, sour candy wedge slices for umbrella top, licorice pastels for umbrella pole, and sweet tarts for the sun.

When creating your ocean popsicles, use Laffy Taffy for fish, fruit roll-ups for seaweed, and sour strings for sea grass.

Those are some tasty lookin’ ocean and beach popsicles.

Ocean and Beach Popsicle Tips:
– Glue heaviest pieces FIRST when you can, work quickly as it is a popsicle and even as it starts to warm up and release moisture, pieces won’t stick as well.
– Work on one popsicle at a time. Leave others in freezer.
– Work with newly purchased popsicles, they tend to be drier than ones sitting in the freezer for weeks.
-As soon as a candy piece appears to be slipping down side of popsicle very slowly, that’s your cue to place in freezer immediately. Open up after a few minutes and if it has slid down, push back up quickly and close freezer. It should freeze back in place.
–  The smaller the candy pieces, the better. Heavy pieces of candy are incredibly difficult to work with. Candy that is flat and thin is the best, so if one piece will not stick, switch it out for some other type of candy that you can cut into the same shape.
-Be delicate when working. Don’t press anything too firmly onto your ocean or beach popsicle. you can’t force the pieces.
– Give popsicles plenty of time to freeze up in between adding pieces.
