Easy Day of The Dead Cake

I grew up with my mother collecting little Day of the Dead / Día de Los Muertos figurines. She has always been fascinated by the holiday. It’s just a really great way to celebrate the passing of loved ones.
It is sort of a colorful, uplifting and positive way to show remembrance.
I thought that a really easy Day of the Dead / Día de Los Muertos cake would be fun to create.
There are only four ingredients needed to decorate, and most of it is incredibly simple! The key ingredient are BUTTERFINGER® Peanut Butter Cups Skulls. I found them at Walmart in the seasonal candy section. The cool thing is that they have no artificial flavors or colors.
Ingredients for Chocolate Cake
-2 sticks butter plus more for the pans
-2 cups flour
-1½ cups granulated sugar
-¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
-½ cup dark brown sugar
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-1 teaspoon kosher salt
-½ cup sour cream
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ingredients for Easy Day of The Dead Cake
– Cake iced with black frosting
– Round candy (I used gumballs, and small round pearl sprinkles)
– BUTTERFINGER® Peanut Butter Cups Skulls (found at Walmart)
– Chocolate writing pens (From baking supply store)
To make the cake, turn over on to 350 º. Grease or butter two 6-inch cake pans. Press a circle of parchment paper into bottom of each.
Mix dry cake ingredients and set to the side.
Melt butter and 1 cup of water in a saucepan on low, then increase temp to boil. Add dry mixture then mix with an electric mixer. Mix in eggs, vanilla, then sour cream.
Pour equal amounts into pans and bake for about 30-40 minutes. You can test by sticking a toothpick into center of the cake. If toothpick comes out clean, it is ready.
Once cool, slice cakes and trim into a tall small cake. Spread an even layer of frosting on top of the first cake, then place second on top. Spread frosting around sides and top. Place a piece of parchment paper on frosting and smooth with hand to create a more seamless texture.
Begin by unwrapping your Butterfinger peanut butter cups skulls. They are all set to go on your cake, just need a little colorful design first. Place colorful chocolate pens in a saucepan filled with water. Heat water on low until chocolate feels soft inside of pens.
Massage pens to move chocolate around. You may need to cut the tip off of pens in order to pipe. Draw designs on skulls. Dots, swirls, hearts and flowers are common Day of the Dead / Día de Los Muertos decorations.
Cover the outside of cake with black frosting. Place butterfinger skulls on top. Line the bottom of cake with gumballs. Then, use small colorful pearl or sixlet candies to form “swirl” patterns around skulls.
No need to worry about artistic ability, or how to pipe out anything special. The use of the Butterfinger skulls and other candy really helps cut out any decorating headaches!
Ready to serve.
